The Art Section at UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts is known worldwide for its exemplary programs and roster of illustrious faculty. The Artists in Residence Programme in Studio Fine art provides a critical bridge for those who want to plough their passion for art into a career. If you lot have already earned a BA or BFA in whatever major and want to prepare for an MFA plan or career as an artist or curator, this unique form of contained study was created with you in mind.
The two-rails programme—one for art making and one for curatorial practices—has been created to meet your specific goals and provide the necessary framework to develop a portfolio of work. The hands-on experience, combined with the program'south Document of Completion, provides the solid foundation needed to pursue your artistic dreams.
Whether you choose the nine-month Artist'due south Runway or 12-month Curatorial Runway , you will piece of work directly with the Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, who serves as the programme's director, besides as other working artists, curators, and professors of UC Irvine'southward renowned Art Department. Specialized programs
The Schoolhouse's Artists in Residence Program in Studio Art is aimed at helping participants create fine art and develop proficiency; get "back into the game" if they've been out of schoolhouse for a while; develop a new body of work or curatorial projection; transition from undergraduate art to MFA studies or to a career in fine art; transition from a non-arts career; explore another medium; interact with a vibrant community of artists; and acculturate participants into the U.S. arts scene.
The Artist'southward Track plan begins in mid-September with an Intensive Study Workshop—a week-long technical workshop to prepare you for the Artists in Residence feel. The plan concludes in mid-June of the following year. During the class of the program, you will create art works under the general direction and guidance of the Program Director, an achieved artist and educator. Works produced during the program and selected by those participating in the Curatorial Track will be exhibited during July and August in ane of UC Irvine's campus art galleries. At the conclusion of the program, you will receive a Document of Completion that will contain a description of your individualized plan.
For those in the Curatorial Track , the program begins with a week-long Intensive Study Workshop in mid-September, and the programme formally concludes in tardily August of the following twelvemonth. Nether the direction of an internationally renowned fine art historian, critic and curator, the class provides opportunities, accessibility and skill development necessary to work in fine art galleries and/or museums. The content-rich programme provides cognition of the issues surrounding exhibition design and the feel of selecting, organizing, installing and publicizing an showroom in a modern gallery. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive a Document of Completion that will contain a description of their individualized program.
Each program is individually tailored to the interest of the participant. Each participant works with the Claire Trevor School of the Arts Dean and with a faculty mentor to pattern their individualized programme, which may consist of coursework from the University's extensive catalog of courses through University Extension's Access UCI Program; specialized readings; or seminars with other program participants.
All participants will meet periodically with the Dean to discuss their personal creative management and to critique and hash out their work; to receive personalized guidance for applying to graduate schoolhouse or to discuss how to market their work. In addition, all participants in the Artist's Track are required to exhibit in the plan's culminating exhibition, and all participants in the Curatorial Rails are required to participate in the curation of that culminating exhibition.
Pre-requisites for access
Participants in either Track typically volition already have earned a bachelor's degree. All applicants must submit a personal argument or letter of the alphabet of intent. Artists must submit an electronic portfolio that will be reviewed by a panel of artists; curators must submit writing samples. All candidates will be interviewed by the program'south director. Curatorial candidates will besides meet with the manager of the University Fine art Galleries. GRE scores are not required for either Track.
